Work on Botanic Garden film begins!

VideoTakes is partnering with Joan D. Murray to create a film about the sustainability efforts of the United States Botanic Garden. I will be the lead producer and writer, which is exciting because I find this topic extremely interesting and important. For more information, please see the press release on the VideoTakes website.

The Reserve receives Honorable Mention at IWFF

The Reserve, a short film I produced with VideoTakes, Inc. for the Alaska Wilderness League, won an Honorable Mention for Cultural Message award from the International Wildlife Film Festival. The video explores the effects of oil and mineral exploration in northwest Alaska – an area that houses both indigenous tribes and some of the most sensitive wildlife lands in the nation.

Extreme Commuting at Earth Day Film Festival

Extreme Commuting will screen at the University of Maryland’s Earth Day Film Festival, April 21 and 22, at 10:15 p.m each night. The list of films is fantastic, so if you can’t make it to mine, I still encourage you to attend. All films will be shown in the Stamp Student Union Building on the UMD campus.

Showings: April 21 and 22

1:00 p.m. – King Corn
2:40 p.m. – Coal Country
4:05 p.m. – Eating Alaska
8:30 p.m. – Food Inc.
10:15 p.m. – Extreme Commuting

Extreme Commuting featured during UMD’s Share the Road Campaign

Extreme Commuting will be featured April 5th during the kickoff event of the University of Maryland’s Share the Road Campaign. The week-long program will highlight road safety for both motorists and bicyclists, as well as publicize UMD’s bicycling facilities. You can learn more about it at bikeumd.wordpress.com. Extreme Commuting will be presented at the Hoff Theater in the Student Union building. Be there at 6:45 p.m. for the film and stay for a Q & A with Mark Plotz, the bicyclist in my film!

Also, be sure to check out this article, which notes that living in DC is often more affordable than living in the suburbs due to the cost of commuting into the city. A similar study was mentioned at the end of Extreme Commuting.

AU to showcase USAID film

Changing the Landscape will be shown at American University’s Spring Film Series next Tuesday, February 23rd. After the film, I will be speaking and answering questions with USAID’s Andrew Tobiason.

The Film Series, which is held on Tuesdays during the fall and spring, is presented by the Center for Environmental Filmmaking and Filmmakers for Conservation. For more information, please email me.

VideoTakes films shown at local festival

The VideoTakes film Nora!, which I helped to market and distribute, will be shown February 14 at the Our City Film Festival in DC. This is the third year in a row that I’ve had a film at the festival. Extreme Commuting was shown in 2009, and Of Politics and Prose was shown at the inaugural festival, in 2008.

An article about the festival appeared in today’s issue of Roll Call. Unfortunately, you have to pay to read the article online, but if you’d like to do that, please follow this link. The article is short but talks about my involvement with the festival and about Nora!.

Another VideoTakes film, Fresh Farm Markets, is also in the festival and has won the Best Mini-Documentary award.

Extreme Commuting helps to raise money for Haiti relief effort

Extreme Commuting was shown at a benefit to raise money for Haiti relief. The benefit took place at American University on January 28th, and it featured a variety of films by AU students and alums.

A short piece I produced with VideoTakes for the Access to Medical Imaging Coalition (AMIC) has been posted on the group’s website. Please go to rightscanrighttime.org and scroll down to the middle of the page for the video! The AMIC represents more than 100,000 physicians, medical providers and patient organizations throughout the U.S., and this video discusses why we should not cut funds for medical imaging.

USAID video shown around the world

Changing the Landscape, the film I produced with VideoTakes for USAID, has been featured at many events. The movie showcases the Global Conservation Program (GCP), an initiative in which six international nonprofits worked to conserve significant areas of biodiversity around the world with the help of local communities and governments. I’m extremely glad that this film is receiving a lot of attention and I hope that people are learning from it. Here are some of the events where it has been and will be shown:

Hi all,

Welcome to the brand new website for my film work! Here you can find video samples as well as information about my work history and recent film projects. This site was created after I finished my graduate thesis film, Extreme Commuting, and realized that I needed a broader professional website. I plan to use the “News” front page to talk about recent projects and lessons I’ve learned on the job.
