About the filmmaker

Andrea in PragueAndrea Bloom is a non-fiction filmmaker who has produced everything from 16mm films to video documentaries. A passion for environmental and social action media defines her career. Andrea has worked at numerous production companies on the west coast and in Washington, DC, and her work has appeared on cable networks, on public broadcasting channels, at film festivals, around the web and in a National Park Service visitor's center.

Andrea received a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in environmental studies from the University of Oregon. She was a production assistant for two Oregon video production companies, as well as a local news station.

In order to concentrate on non-fiction media, Andrea moved to Washington, DC to attend film school at American University. During this time, she worked with the Center for Environmental Filmmaking to create a code for best practices in environmental filmmaking. She also helped to produce several movies, including EcoViews: The Chesapeake Bay, a special for Maryland Public Television that won a regional Student Emmy Award.

American University also provided the opportunity for Andrea to spend a semester abroad in Prague at the Film and TV School of The Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU). There, she fine-tuned her knowledge of 16mm film and created On, Ona.

Upon her return, Andrea began work on her master's thesis film, Extreme Commuting, and became an associate producer at the National Park Service. She graduated with her Master of Fine Arts degree in 2008 and stayed in DC to continue her work as a producer and writer.
